what is the appropriate age TO START WEARING BRACES?

There is no age threshold for beginning the orthodontic treatment. At an early age, the orthodontic treatment very often consists in observing and steering the process of teeth eruption through planned extractions of baby teeth, applying mobile braces and permanent braces that help us align the teeth and influence the direction and pace of jawbone and mandible growth, which has an immense impact on the patient’s appearance in the future.

If a parent or a practitioner are concerned about the problem, the patient should immediately undergo orthodontic consultation. Defects in baby teeth not always require an intervention, but observation is always recommended to be able to identify the right moment to start the active treatment. Too early a loss of baby teeth is also an indication for orthodontic consultation, since it often requires the use of space retainers that prevent teeth from migrating to post-extraction gaps, which limits space for permanent teeth.

Orthodontic treatment does not impose an upper age threshold either. If the teeth are stable enough and there is sufficient bone in which the teeth may be moved, we can apply orthodontic treatment when it is necessary to improve the function and aesthetics or as a preparation for the prosthetic treatment.

how long MUST THE BRACES BE WORN?

The length of the orthodontic treatment always depends on the intensity of malocclusion. Minor aesthetic defects may be corrected within several months, while more complex treatment plans usually last between 1 and 2.5 years. On average, the Invisalign aligner treatment is six months shorter than the treatment with permanent braces.

is the treatment PAINFUL?

The orthodontic treatment may entail certain discomfort related to the rubbing of new elements against the oral mucosa, tooth tenderness that usually appears at the beginning of treatment and 1-2 days after the check-up related to the arch replacement. All procedures related to driving the microimplants are performed under anaesthesia and are painless.

Discomfort related to the healing mucosa damage may appear until 7 days following the introduction of the microimplant.

The aligners eliminate all ailments related to the rubbing of metal elements against the mucosa and entail less intense tooth tenderness during the treatment.

how to maintain oral hygiene WHILE WEARING BRACES?

The orthodontic treatment is a period of an increased hygienic regime. It requires patient’s involvement and perseverance. During the treatment by either permanent or aligner braces, it is necessary to brush your teeth after each meal as well as in the morning and in the evening, applying dental floss to all interdental spaces at least once a day. When using permanent braces, an interdental brush may be of help, as it facilitates brushing the space between the locks. Applying additional fluoride wash is also recommended. Hygienic negligence may lead to enamel decalcification (white spots), while in extreme cases the practitioner may decide to remove the braces despite not having achieved the planned results.

Orthodontic patients should regularly (at least once in six months) undergo a professional hygienisation procedure at a dental clinic.
